Prepping for Spell Work

Updated: May 23, 2025

Many folks have asked me if my products have backlash or if they backfire. There is certainly a possibility for that to happen, but that depends on your prep, intentions, the spell itself, who or what you are attempting to do work on and if you have done any divination beforehand.

Before doing any spell work I like to ensure I have a few things in place to secure myself, my home, those in my environment, and my working. There are many different ways to do this depending on you as an individual. Everyone has their preferred ways of working with energy to protect themselves. Some like charged objects like jewelry, crystals or talismans, some like oils and spiritual waters, some like working with spirits, deities, ancestors, etc. Some like to combine many different methods of protection. It doesn't matter what you choose. The rule of thumb is simply to always have protection. This goes for protection before, during and after casting spells, and for the upkeep of your spiritual hygiene. Protection magic is the first type of magic I, and most of the magical community, would agree on as the first step any practitioner should do before attempting spell work.

Before protection can begin you first need to cleanse yourself, your space and your items to remove any energy that could tamper with the energy of protection. You always want to start on a clean slate in spell work to avoid pulling on things you do not want. As with protection, cleansing takes many different forms and should be adapted to your needs. Just ensure some amount of cleansing happens prior to performing spell work to ensure the intentions being infused into the work remain pure. You can't protect yourself or anything else if you are not first addressing the root issue of protection. The idea of protection suggests you need to be protected from something, and that something can take the form of energies or entities lingering around you and your space. You should first seek to remove any contaminants from around yourself to begin the process of keeping the space protected and consecrated.

Another important step in spell work involves discernment and divination. The backlash people are often so worried about tends to stem from the innate worry they have about what they are doing. Here is where your discernment and use of divinatory tools will come in. It's imperative to be wary of who you are attempting to perform spell work on, how you are feeling going into the spell work, and what the possible outcome of this spell work would be. It requires trusting your intuition, and attempting to peek beyond the veil at what could happen based on how you are approaching the working at the moment. Divination comes in many forms as well, and is up to the individual to decide which path to embark on.

The last topic I want to touch on for prepping before spell work in this post is planning your spell. You should always plan what you are going to do during your spell. This goes for what materials you are using, what your divination or discernment showed you, what your intentions are, safety measures if you are using any fire or candles in your spell, offerings if you are working with spirits or deities, and lastly, patience and time. You should try to find the time to ensure you can complete the full ritualistic aspect of spell work so you can see the results you want. This includes prepping yourself and your space, having solitude and quiet time for focus and enough time to complete the spell. Some spells can even be spanned out over days if you only have small amounts of time to dedicate to the spell work. Time is necessary to be intentional through every step of the process and to ensure no mistakes are made that could jeopardize the outcome. There are, of course, the smaller spells that can be done within minutes and don't require long setup or prep. It is up to you to discern and understand what could work best for your situation.

I will be diving into methods of protection in more detail on other posts, as well as directions and resources for creating your own protective wards and items.
